The Committee to Protect Journalists is seeking a program coordinator for its Africa program to oversee its work defending journalists and press freedom in sub-Saharan Africa.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in Africa, a deep knowledge of regional press freedom issues, experience as an advocate, and the ability to report breaking news and to produce in-depth special reports. This is a post requiring a passionate and proven commitment to improving press freedom conditions in a region where freedom of expression is constantly under threat. Fluency in spoken and written English is essential; knowledge of French would be an asset.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Report on press freedom and attacks on journalists in the region.
- Advocate for the release of jailed journalists and for an end to impunity in the murder of journalists.
- Oversee the production of daily and long-form reports on press freedom conditions.
- Serve as a CPJ spokesperson with the media, governments, partner organizations, and civil society.
- Manage a full-time researcher in New York and 3 representatives based in the region.
- Anticipate and respond to news and events affecting press freedom and journalists to ensure that these issues are brought to a broad international audience.
- Devise and support advocacy efforts and campaigns, and articulate them with the CPJ's broad organizational goals.
- Assist distressed journalists within the framework of CPJ's Journalist Assistance Program.
EDUCATION: Graduate degree or equivalent qualification.
EXPERIENCE:
- A minimum of five years of experience in media or advocacy work in press freedom issues connected with Africa including those around online censorship.
- Understanding of press freedom issues in the context of Africa
- A firm understanding of geopolitical issues with the ability to analyze and relate these to press freedom as needed.
- Proven skills in writing succinct and high quality reports including the capacity to digest, interpret and accurately summarize reports and data.
This is a New York-based position which will require travel to Africa several times a year.
