Tanzania Bureau of Standards - 2012 Standards Day Essay Competition

Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) has great pleasure in announcing the Standards Day Essay Competition 2012. The competition is aimed at any student in the private sector, government, or academia. Entrants are secondary school students pursuing their studies in Dar es Salaam region and co-authorship is not permitted.

World Standards Day is celebrated internationally each year on 14 October to honor the efforts of the thousands of experts who develop standards within standards development organizations. The aim of World Standards Day is to raise awareness among regulations, industry and consumers as to the importance of standardization to the global economy.

PURPOSE: Create awareness among youth who are prepared to enter the job market on how and why standards are developed. Make students aware of the need and benefits of standards. The competition encourages students to explore their own unique perspectives on how standards facilitate innovation and how society as a whole can benefit.

THE CHALLENGE: Topic for 2012 is “Less waste, better results. Standards increase efficiency.”

RULES FOR THE STANDARDS DAY ESSAY COMPETITION:
  • The paper must be original and not previously published.
  • Papers shall be between 1,000 and 1,500 words only (not including notes, tables, charts, and bibliography, which may not exceed 3 pages). Longer or shorter papers will be disqualified.
  • Graphics within the text are encouraged and can significantly add to the overall content and appeal of a paper.
  • Papers shall be formatted in 11 point, Arial, double spaced on 8.5” x 11” paper, with a margin of 1 inch on all four sides.
  • The first page shall contain only the title of the paper, name of the student, contacts, school of student and the number of words (at TBS the first page will be removed before printing for submission to the Judges and each essay will be given special code on its delivery, this is done to assure impartiality),.
  • Only one paper may be submitted by each entrant.
  • Papers shall be submitted in English only and suitable for publication (assistance will be offered for final editing before publication of winning paper), in an electronic format (preferably in Microsoft Word) via email.
Papers that do not follow all of these rules will not be forwarded to the judges and will not be eligible for any wards. Papers will be reviewed by a panel of independent three (3) judges selected by TBS and approved by the TBS management. The judges will have absolute discretion to decide the winner of the competition or, in the event of no papers being of sufficient merit, to withhold any award.

Contestants grant publication rights to TBS and to any of the sponsoring organizations if any, as well as the right to release entries to other media.
