JOURNALIST GRADE II - 2 POSTS

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Gathers and writes news and stories,
• Writes scripts and continuities and prepares programmes for radio and television products,
• Collects, reports and comments on news and current affairs for broadcasting by radio or television,
• Interviews politicians and other public figures at press conferences and on occasions, including individual interviews recorded for radio or television,
• Writes editorials and selects, revises, arranges and edits submitted articles and other materials for broadcasting on radio or television,
• Writes advertising copy promoting particular products or services,
• Selects, assembles and prepares publicity materials about business or other organizations for being broadcast through radio, television or other media,
• Provides professional and technical support to other junior reporters/journalists,
• Perform any other related duties as may be assigned by Supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor Degree or Advanced Diploma in Journalism, Mass Communication, TV/Film Production from a recognized Institution. Knowledge in word processing, graphics, photographing, photo-editing and video shooting is an added advantage. Computer skills are essential.

REMUNERATION: Attractive remuneration package in accordance with the Institution’s salary scale PGSS 10.

Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) has great pleasure in announcing the Standards Day Essay Competition 2012. The competition is aimed at any student in the private sector, government, or academia. Entrants are secondary school students pursuing their studies in Dar es Salaam region and co-authorship is not permitted.

World Standards Day is celebrated internationally each year on 14 October to honor the efforts of the thousands of experts who develop standards within standards development organizations. The aim of World Standards Day is to raise awareness among regulations, industry and consumers as to the importance of standardization to the global economy.

PURPOSE: Create awareness among youth who are prepared to enter the job market on how and why standards are developed. Make students aware of the need and benefits of standards. The competition encourages students to explore their own unique perspectives on how standards facilitate innovation and how society as a whole can benefit.

THE CHALLENGE: Topic for 2012 is “Less waste, better results. Standards increase efficiency.”

RULES FOR THE STANDARDS DAY ESSAY COMPETITION:

• The paper must be original and not previously published.
• Papers shall be between 1,000 and 1,500 words only (not including notes, tables, charts, and bibliography, which may not exceed 3 pages). Longer or shorter papers will be disqualified.
• Graphics within the text are encouraged and can significantly add to the overall content and appeal of a paper.
• Papers shall be formatted in 11 point, Arial, double spaced on 8.5” x 11” paper, with a margin of 1 inch on all four sides.
• The first page shall contain only the title of the paper, name of the student, contacts, school of student and the number of words (at TBS the first page will be removed before printing for submission to the Judges and each essay will be given special code on its delivery, this is done to assure impartiality),.
• Only one paper may be submitted by each entrant.
• Papers shall be submitted in English only and suitable for publication (assistance will be offered for final editing before publication of winning paper), in an electronic format (preferably in Microsoft Word) via email.
  

Papers that do not follow all of these rules will not be forwarded to the judges and will not be eligible for any wards. Papers will be reviewed by a panel of independent three (3) judges selected by TBS and approved by the TBS management. The judges will have absolute discretion to decide the winner of the competition or, in the event of no papers being of sufficient merit, to withhold any award.

Contestants grant publication rights to TBS and to any of the sponsoring organizations if any, as well as the right to release entries to other media.

Funded by Thomson Reuters Foundation: Rural Poverty Reporting Course in Tanzania (Africa-wide)

In line with IFAD’s commitment to amplify the debate on rising food prices and how to achieve global food security, this training workshop, to run concurrently with the African Green Revolution Forum (AGRF) will allow journalists from Africa to enhance their skills required to cover the issues facing the rural people and their communities and bring these to the attention of policy and decision makers, both nationally and regionally. Journalists will attend one session of the AGRF, spend a day visiting an IFAD project on the ground, as well as spending time in a workshop. Workshops sessions will look at issues such as basic economics of food production, market access, competition for resources, population movements and access to water.

The David Astor Journalism Awards (Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda)

The David Astor Journalism Awards Trust (DAJAT) is a London-based human rights charity that works to promote, strengthen and support independent journalism in Africa.

It is named in honour of the late distinguished editor of The Observer newspaper in London for 27 years, from 1948 to 1975, who was a lifelong champion of African development, human rights and other social justice causes.

Established in 2006, the Trust runs an innovative programme for African journalists focusing on professional development and long-term career support. The programme currently operates in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda.

We search for and invest in exceptionally promising early-career print journalists working in English with the greatest potential and commitment to excel in the profession.

We also aim to build and sustain a regional peer-support network of these next-generation media leaders to promote good governance, defend human rights, and further socio-political development.

THE AWARDS:

The David Astor Journalism Awards are not conventional awards in the sense of recognising some significant achievement. They represent instead a long-term commitment by the Trust to invest in and support the career development of exceptionally promising young journalists with the greatest potential to excel in the future.

Presently, the Trust is focused on Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. We make three awards each year within the region.

Choosing the candidates is a highly selective process. First, a wide-ranging group of local nominators in each country identifies potentially suitable candidates for consideration. A rigorous, multi-stage staff review, assessment and short-listing process follows. Finally, an independent panel of judges interviews the finalists and selects three winners.

The award winners initially take part in a three-month professional development programme tailored to their particular interests and needs. These usually involve work experience attachments with newspapers in the UK or South Africa. They then receive continuing professional support as career-long members of the David Astor Award Winners’ Network.

Each award winner also receives a nominal cash award of $500 (the runners-up receive $250).

CRITERIA:

Candidates are assessed primarily on the basis of these five key criteria:

• Professional Commitment. Are they passionate about practicing journalism as a professional ‘calling’, not just as an income-producing job? Do they have clear long-term aspirations within the profession and the determination to achieve their aims?
• Local Commitment. Do they have strong ties to their local community and highly value the contribution they can make by working locally as a journalist? Do their career goals include continuing to practice journalism in their own country or elsewhere in Africa?
• Talent. Do they display some special talent, aptitude and flair for journalism – distinct from the abilities and skills they may have acquired through formal education and training – and do they have high potential to excel in the profession?
• Ethical Standards. Do they have unquestionable integrity and adhere to the highest ethical principles in both their professional and personal lives?
• Personal Qualities. Do they have a sufficiently strong, resilient character to withstand the rigours of the profession and thrive? Are they highly motivated, ambitious and driven? Are they confident, independent-minded, courageous, resourceful and persistent?

There are no specific age restrictions, or educational, training and work experience requirements but candidates must be full-time working journalists (employed or freelance).

AWARD PROGRAMMES:

Each award winner takes part in a work experience programme, individually tailored to his or her particular professional development needs and interests, lasting three months.

The award programmes are designed in consultation with the winner and their employer, but they all involve working with journalists from outside the award winner’s own country, usually in newsrooms in the UK and South Africa.

The general aim of these programmes is to expose the award winners to different news reporting environments and some of the special know-how, expertise and working practices of other, more seasoned journalists.

They offer opportunities for the award winners to enhance their capabilities in ways that would not ordinarily be available to them, to broaden their professional outlook, and to develop useful new contacts.

The Maisha Documentary Film Lab 2012 for East African Screenwriters and Directors

Your application for the 4th Annual Maisha Documentary lab will only be processed if you meet the following criteria:-

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

1. You need to fill out the application form correctly and in fully.

2. Cover letter introducing yourself, letting us knows about the work you’ve done in documentary film, your interest in directing, cinematography or editing (or all the above), and why you want to attend the lab. No more than 3 pages.

3. You must be a citizen of Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania or Uganda and residing in one of the four countries.

4. As confirmation of citizenship attach a copy of your Passport or another ID indicating citizenship

5. You must also be least 18 years of age by July 1st 2012.

6. Resume/CV, including name, address, email, and telephone, no more than 3 pages.

7. 3- 5 page essay about your story – who is the main character

8. A 200-word treatment for a documentary short. The subject for the documentary should be articulated as a “Short Documentary Portrait.” Portrait can be defined liberally and can include anything from an exploration of a person, a place or an event.

9. You must submit a Samples of previous work can be on VHS or DVD, PAL or NTSC

SELECTION OF PARTICIPANTS

1. Participants will be selected at the sole discretion of the Maisha Selection Committee.

2. Applicants selected for participation will be informed via email by 6th August 2012 at the latest.

3. The list of selected participants will be published on our website. There is no legal claim to participate in the Maisha Film Lab.

4. Strictly one project per applicant.

5. Materials submitted will NOT be returned.

6. Only Applicants that are SHORT LISTED will be contacted (via email).

7. You must be fluent in both, written and spoken English.

The lab will be conducted in English. However please note if chosen your script can be filmed in any language of your choose.

EXPENSES

1. All participants are responsible for their own travel costs to Uganda.

2. All participants are responsible for any visa or vaccination costs associated with traveling to Uganda.

3. The cost covered by Maisha Film Lab will include accommodation, food, and transport during the lab and the cost of producing the 4 shorts.

Production Restrictions:

• Topic must be feasible to produce in Kampala during a two-day shoot
• Final piece should be no more than 5-10 minutes in length

Have you ever wished to travel across the country – to remote parts, covering hidden or neglected issues that would generate public debate and eventually lead to intervention?
Do you want to hone your journalistic skills and creativity under the tutelage of local and international mentors that will change your analytical approach and comprehension of issues?

Then this Fellowship Programme is for you!

The Tanzania Media Fund (TMF) is an exciting initiative that seeks to promote independence and quality in media, with a particular focus on public interest and investigative journalism. The Fund believes that an independent media is the lifeblood of a free and democratic society.
TMF is now accepting applications from journalists for its 2012 Fellowship Programme. The application deadline is June 15, 2012. The six-month fellowship is available to 10 Tanzanian journalists.

ELIGIBILITY:

• A firm commitment to working in journalism in Tanzania
• Have been covering variety of issues but have a passion to specialize in maternal health, business and economics or the extractive industry (oil, gas and minerals).
• Should be ready to undertake a significant stretch of travel for considerable periods of up to six weeks away from home during the programme.
• Knowledge of English and Kiswahili
• Interests in the “New Media” is an added advantage

APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUPPORTED WITH

• An abridged CV
• A 300 – 500 personal statement, describing your journalistic experience, aspirations and career plans; what journalistic values that have motivated you to apply for the TMF 2012 Fellowship Programme.
• A 300 – 500 word proposal on Maternal Health, Business and Economics or the Extractive Industry. However, a proposal on a different field may be considered provided that it is unique and a candidate is able to explain why he/she feels it is important.
• Two Letters of recommendation; one from an individual who is knowledgeable of your work, who can comment on your journalistic ability and potentials and another from your editor.
• Leave letter from your employer and proof that your work will be published/ broadcast/posted online.
• Three samples of your published work

NOTE: The program is not intended to provide basic skills training to journalists. Participants will therefore be journalists who have honed some considerable level of skills in the profession.

The Fellows will be given an incomparable opportunity to travel to different parts of the country to write on issues that break fresh ground for media coverage in Tanzania. They also stand to benefit from an intensive programme of seminars facilitated by some of the best experts in maternal health, business and extractive industry. The seminars are part of the fellowship’s goal of widening the journalists’ perspectives on different aspects of society.

The Fellowship will begin in July, 2012 through the end of December, 2012. Fellows will be given a stipend in addition to having all your costs covered during the Fellowship.

OBJECTIVES OF THE COMPETITION

• To support and motivate the development of supplementary reading materials for a critical stage of learning-the transition period between mother tongue and English medium instruction.
• To strengthen the English language skills of its reading audience and help foster improved skill levels and enthusiasm for reading.
• To stimulate and support the African publishing industry and African literature.
• To increase the stock of English readers in established school libraries and other libraries in Tanzania.
• To recognize excellence in young adult fiction from Africa.

CRITERIA FOR MANUSCRIPTS

• The story should be prose fiction containing content and language appropriate for upper primary school pupils, thus youth between 12-15 years old.
• The story should be written in English.
• The story should be prose fiction containing content and language appropriate for ages 12 – 15.
• The story should demonstrate a sound command of English, through clear, cohesive language and proper sentence structure, vocabulary and punctuation.
• The story should have a strong literacy merit including;
• Engaging characters with whom young readers can identify and protagonists who overcome challenges or obstacles in a positive way.
• A well-developed plot with a good flow of events.
• The story should inspire Tanzanian children and youth to read.
• The story should have an excellent storytelling style e.g. strong imagery, lively dialogue, and vivid description to arouse young readers’ interest and curiosity and keep them turning pages.
• The story should reflect current issues and challenges of concern to contemporary Tanzania.
• Manuscripts which have the potential to evolve into a book series or sequel will be welcome.

MODALITY OF SUBMISSION

Publishers shall submit manuscripts on behalf of authors. A publisher is eligible to submit up to 3 manuscripts annually for the competition. Manuscripts will be prepared in collaboration from the start by authors with their publishers. This is a deliberate measure to ensure that the submitted manuscripts are edited to a great extent before they are submitted for consideration.

COMPETITION STIPULATIONS

• Authors must be residents and nationals of Tanzania.
• Winning authors from the previous year’s competition are not permitted to submit a manuscript until the following year in order to and avoid monopoly of the award by the same.

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION GUIDE

• The length of the manuscript should be between 30,000-40,000 words (equivalent to approximately 90-120 pages)
• The manuscript should be in chapter form
• The manuscript should be type-written and double spaced
• The font type should be Times New Roman, font size 12

All manuscripts should be submitted to the Children’s Book Project office by 26th of March 2012 at 14:00 , including a soft copy to cbpvitabu@yahoo.com.

JURYING PROCESS

Manuscripts will be reviewed by a qualified jury and assessed on the criteria set out above. The jury will determine a short-list of titles eligible to win prizes once they are further edited and published into books.

PUBLISHING OF MANUSCRIPTS: FROM MANUSCRIPT TO PUBLISHED BOOK

Shortlisted manuscripts will be furthered rewritten and edited by the authors with their publishers. Only once the titles are fully edited and in published book format will they be reviewed again by the jury to award first, second and third prize. There is no guarantee that shortlisted titles will win prizes. Only those that are of the highest quality are worthy and eligible of being prize winners.

Guaranteed Purchase of Winning Titles

The Jahazi Literary and Jazz Festival Opens September 1st (Tanzania)

Jahazi is a non-profit organisation that is dedicated to inspiring youth, learning and education through literature and music.

The festival will consist of discussions, talks, lectures, workshops, seminars and forums designed to stimulate discussion and debate and also to educate people on relevant current issues which effect all of us; globalisation, poverty, health, conservation, conflict, and learning.


It is hoped that the festival will become a forum which will hope promote the notion that literature, music and the media can achieve positive social change.

Alongside the festival we will be running a schools programme, a festival art walk, an architectural and historical walk of the Unesco world heritage site of Stone Town.

BBC Training for Journalists from Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Burundi

Come to Moshi, Tanzania within sight of Mount Kilimanjaro. Receive excellent training from BBC trainers. Cover an inspiring youth sports development tournament. Make friends and tell the world about it.

The East Africa Cup is about a week in Moshi, and a year in the community. It’s for organisations who use sport in a positive way in East Africa, and for young people involved it’s an opportunity to get involved in an excellent sport, cultural exchange and education event.

Before a ball is kicked, young people attend workshops in topics like health, conflict resolution and leadership skills. Their leaders benefit not just from co-hosting the event, but also from the opportunities associated with being amongst some of the best referees, youth leaders and physios in the region.

The BBC World Service Trust has been involved in the event for the last two years, delivering training and mentoring in both journalism and media skills for youth leaders who need to use the media to get their message across.

It’s not just a sports story, so we don’t just want sports journalists: the practical training will cover interview skills, social media for journalists, getting a story from a press conference, and how to cover sports for development.

Accommodation and food is provided as is transport: although you’ll be travelling on the team coach, not flying. After the tournament you’ll get the chance to be mentored online by the team.

Opportunity International's Tanzania Correspondent Contest (for US residents)

Winner will travel to the East African nation to document the Impact of microfinance on women; Contest entry period officially began on April 13 and runs through May 11.

In celebration of its “Banking on Women” campaign, Opportunity International, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing access to savings accounts, small business loans and financial services to people working their way out of poverty in the developing world, today launched its Tanzania Correspondent Contest.


The first-place winner of the Tanzania Correspondent Contest will travel to the United Republic of Tanzania with Opportunity International’s Young Ambassadors for Opportunity (YAO). There, the contest winner will use his or her creative writing skills, photography know-how and/or video production expertise to help the non-profit tell the story of how women in the East African nation can become leaders and change agents within their communities, when given access to small business loans and other financial services.

For impoverished women, secure banking services have remained largely out of reach due to a lack of proper identification required to open a bank account. For many, an Opportunity International bank card is their first step toward establishing formal identification. To give women in the developing world safe, secure access to banking services, Opportunity deploys cutting-edge technologies such as smart cards and biometric fingerprint readers. With biometric fingerprint technology, Opportunity is able to ensure that no one else, not even her spouse or his relatives, can take money out of her account. To access her savings, a client simply inserts the card and presses her finger to the screen. Greater control over her family’s resources can lead to expanded economic opportunities and a stronger voice in family and community matters.

About the Tanzania Correspondent Contest

Opportunity International’s Tanzania Correspondent contest is open to all U.S. residents, aged 21 and older. The contest entry period is from Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at 3:01 p.m. (CT) to Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at 11:59 p.m. (CT). Contestants can enter by visiting http://www.facebook.com/opportunityintl and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the essay entry form.

Submitted entries will need to include a 100 words, or less, essay explaining what the contestant hopes to learn from Opportunity’s clients, if the contestant were to travel on the Opportunity International Insight Trip. The essay should also address how the contestant would use story-telling skills, such as photography, video production, and creative writing, to document the impact that Opportunity’s programs and services are making on the women of Tanzania.

Ten runners-up in the contest will be announced on May 13, 2011. Runners-up will be notified by e-mail within 24 hours of their selection. Between 12:01 a.m. CT on May 14, 2011 and 11:59 p.m. (CT) on May 25, 2011 , the public will vote to determine the contest winner, online at http://www.opportunity.org/contest.

Excellence in Journalism Awards - Tanzania Officially Launched

The organizing committee of nine partners led by the Media Council of Tanzania (MCT) laid out terms and conditions for vying for the Excellence in Journalism Awards Tanzania (EJAT) which this time are in 17 categories.

Entry forms for the EJAT competition can be accessed on the MCT website , and are also available in media houses and for those in the regions can get them from the Union of Tanzania Press Clubs (UTPC).

Entries for EJAT will be judged on their uniqueness, creativity, and research work, mastery of language, ethical reporting and balancing of story.

The new categories for 2010 are Best Cartoonist, Best Photo journalist, Best writer in Disability reporting, Best Telecommunication reporting and Best on science and technology reporting. There will be an open category which will take care of other outstanding works which do not fall in the other categories. The other categories are: Good Governance, Gender, Economic and Business Sports, Environment, Health HIV and AIDS , Malaria , Education , Labor and working Relations, and Children Reporting.

All winners will be awarded certificates, trophies; prize and work equipment and the overall winner will in addition get a scholarship worth 4,000 USD. The successful winners will be feted at a grand ceremony to be held on World Press Freedom Day on May 3, this year in Dar es Salaam.
