Deadline Extended for Looklocal Creative Writing Competition: Win a Journalism Internship Programme with Caxton Newspapers (South Africa)

(Nore: There was an earlier announcement with an August 31st deadline that we posted here. The competition is now open to high school students in Joburg South and Sowento. A new theme has also been added, "Faces of Spring".)

Southgate Mall and looklocal are giving all high school students in the Alberton, Joburg South and Soweto areas an opportunity to write a short story which could win them amazing prizes.

Creative Writing Competition coordinator at Caxton Local Newspapers Malcolm Maifala said, "Due to the response we have had and the popular demand, Southgate and looklocal decided to extend the competition to learners who live in Alberton, Joburg South and Soweto.

"After expanding our target market we also decided to extend the competition by at least one month."

The Creative Writing Competition started on June 1 and will end on October 1 to give everyone equal opportunity to enter and win amazing prizes.

The Top three writers in the first category which is open to Grade eight, nine and ten will each receive a brand new Blackberry Smartphone while the top three writers in the second category which is open to Grade 11 and 12 learners will each receive a Samsung P1 tablet and a Kodak 14MP camera. While one lucky Grade 12 student will be awarded an opportunity to do a total of six months internship with Caxton Local Newspapers, (terms and conditions apply).

Southgate Mall and the looklocal Writing Competition aims to provide young people with a platform to kick start a career in the media industry. High school students can post their entries from June 1 to October 1 via e-mail or hand-deliver them to Caxton South offices or Southgate Mall.

All high school students in the South of Johannesburg and Alberton areas may enter the competition. Look out for regular updates on your favourite news website, looklocal Joburg South and looklocal Alberton and follow quick links on the websites' facebook pages.

Caxton will also offer training to the winning Grade 12 student which includes a three month practical training course at Caxton South Newspapers and three months intensive theory training with Caxton Editorial Cadet Training.

Lucky Thusi, who is now the Southern COURIER's News Editor, Malcolm Maifala and Monique Hefer, both reporters with Caxton South Newspapers are success stories of the Caxton Editorial Cadet Training.

To enter the competition writers will have to write on the following topics, Pride, Respect and Honour, Celebrating Women and a new theme Faces of Spring.

COMPETITION RULES:
  • The competition is open to students schooling and living in the following areas; Alberton, Joburg South and Soweto. Children who are home schooled may also enter.
  • Entries from people who have completed school or dropped out of school will not be accepted.
  • The Judges decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into. Prizes on offer are not transferable for cash.
  • Only students from Grade 8 to Grade 12 may enter, all other students will not be legible to enter.
  • Entrants related to employees of Southgate Mall and Caxton South Newspapers will not be allowed to enter.
  • The competition starts June 1 and ends October 1.
  • Short Stories or Essays should have a minimum of 600 and a maximum of 2 000 words.
  • Entrants may enter on as many themes as they wish, but may not submit more than one entry on the same theme.
