For Arabic to French Translators - Call for Nominations: Ibn Khaldoun – Senghor Translation Award ($10,000 top prize)

The Lebanese National Commission for UNESCO is a national body that liaises between the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as well as the Arab League Educational Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) and the Anna Lindh Euro-Mediterranean Foundation for the Dialogue between Cultures (ALF) on one side, and the national official departments and the Lebanese civil society on the other side, in the areas of education, sciences, culture and communication.

The Lebanese National Commission for Unesco is calling for nominations for the Ibn Khaldoun – Senghor Translation Award 2012 for best works of Arabic – French Translation in the field of humanities. The 2012 nomination mechanics have not been posted yet on the LNCU website, and are available only by sending an e-mail to info@lncu.org. However, to give you an idea of the works eligible for the award as well as the prizes, please read the 2011 regulations/ details below. Keep in mind that these are for the 2011 award cycle, and there may be minimal changes for the 2012 award:

TARGET:
  • Translation: translated from French into Arabic and from Arabic into French
  • The works for this award must meet the following criteria:
    • be the first recent translation from Arabic into French or from French to Arabic the original work.
    • the great classical texts of the two cultures are exempt from this condition.
    • have not received another award.
PRIZE:
  • a diploma signed by the Secretary General of the UN and the Director General of ALECSO
  • a grant of $ 10,000 dollars (7,000 euros) at a rate of 5,000 dollars (3,500 euros) for each partner.
