Job Vacancy: Hard News Reporter for The Citizen Newspaper (Gauteng, South Africa)

An opportunity for a hard news reporter exists within our Editorial Department reporting to the News Editor of The Citizen newspaper.

PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To cover hard news stories assigned by the News Editor and to write accurate and well-written copy for daily publication.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Be equally comfortable writing a crime, general or political story
  • Production of accurate and well-written news copy
  • Gathering of news from a variety of reliable sources
  • Generation of ideas and proposals for new stories
  • Covering important events/issues timeously
  • Establishing a network of contacts
  • Ability to work overtime and on weekends
  • Monitor electronic news outlets to pick up on news leads and story ideas.
CORE COMPETENCIES:
  • At least two years daily newsroom experience, with emphasis on hard news.
  • Talent for writing coupled with a keen news sense
  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in journalism
  • Passion for breaking news
  • Good general knowledge and knowledge of current affairs
  • Ability to work accurately and under pressure
  • Deadline driven
  • High degree of professionalism
  • Must be able to work independently and with little supervision
  • Computer literate
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid driver's licence a must
  • Must own a vehicle
