Report to the Associate Director for Editorial Programs, the Managing Editor will manage and schedule all publications of the AUC Press from receipt of manuscript through production.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
- Manage, plan and timetable all editorial work in the press from raw manuscripts through production, with responsibility for the overall quality of published material
- Draw up in collaboration with the production manager design and production schedules for press publication; draw up in collaboration with the associate director for editorial programs, the senior commissioning editor and the production manager a timetabled publishing program for the two publishing seasons of the academic year
- Manage, train and supervise in-house project editors
- Manage, train and supervise a wide network of freelance suppliers, including copy editors, proofreaders and indexers, commissioning and coordinating their work
- Edit manuscripts and prepare them for design and production; collaborate with the production manager in the management of book budgets
- Collaborate with the associate director for editorial programs, the senior commissioning editor and the production manager in organizing images for publication, ensuring that images are checked for quality in-house and that any replacement images are obtained from the author or other relevant parties ahead of publication, with relevant permissions
- Plan, correct and approve book page layout with the production manager and editorial department members; supervise and work closely with book designers and authors through all necessary proof stages until production
- Coordinate editorial and production matters with foreign publishing houses with which the press has made any co-publishing or production agreement
- Plan and approve jacket designs with the production manager, editorial department members and sales/marketing team
- Maintain and develop editorial house style
- Other related editorial tasks requested by the associate director for editorial programs, including writing catalog copy and checking seasonal catalogs
EXPERIENCE: Four years manuscript editorial in scholarly publishing; two year supervisory
SKILLS: Perfect mastery of English; good knowledge of written and spoken Arabic; organizational and managerial skills; thorough familiarity with Apple Macintosh computer system and applications; manuscript editing skills; knowledge of book design and production
