DATES OF CONTEST: "Black History Month Essay Contest" entries will be accepted from January 17 - February 28, 2013 (the "Entry Period"). Contest will run from January 17 - February 28, 2013 (the "Contest Period").
HOW TO ENTER: Magic 92.5 (XHRM-FM 92.5) and Z90 (XHTZ-FM 90.3) will announce for contestants to enter their essay for Black History Month, with the theme "Standing On Their Shoulders - Inspired By The African-Americans Who Came Before You." Contestants will be asked to submit their original essay describing someone in the African American community (past or present) who has made a difference to the writer. What impact did that person have on you?
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: Entries will be accepted and judged in the following 4 divisions: Grades 3-5; Grades 6-8; Grades 9-12; Open (Ages 18+)
Please follow these rules exactly. Essays that do not conform to the rules may be disqualified.
The title page must include the title of the essay, contestant's name, grade level, address, telephone number, and email address (if available).
- The essay must not exceed 500 words.
- Typed essays must be 12 pt. font, double-spaced.
- Handwritten essays must be legible, on plain white or lined paper.
- Mail-in submissions may be submitted to "SDG&E/Magic 92.5 Black History Month Essay Contest, 6160 Cornerstone Court East, Suite 150, San Diego CA 92121. Mail-in submissions must be postmarked by February 26, 2013.
- Online submissions may be submitted at www.Magic925.com/sdgecontest, www.z90.com/sdgecontest. All submissions (mail-in or online) are due by February 28, 2013, at 5pm PST. There is no exception to this date.
- Portions of essays may be used in advertising efforts.

PRIZES: "Black History Month Essay Contest" winners will each receive an iPad Mini (Value: $329). Winners will also be eligible for speech and voice coaching from the Black Storytellers Organization and will receive two tickets to a production at the Ira Aldridge Repertory Players Theatre (Value: $50). Winning essay participants may be featured in advertising efforts including, but not limited to, print, online and/or radio. “Black History Month Essay Contest” contest prizes will be awarded under the discretion of the Sponsors (value TBD). Prizes will be awarded pending verification of eligibility. Prizes are non-transferable; no substitutions are permitted. All prizes must be redeemed from the Magic 92.5 / Z90 Business Office, the winner must execute and return any required affidavit of eligibility and/or liability/publicity release and applicable Federal, State and/or Local tax forms within 10 business days of being notified or prize will be forfeited. If a winner cannot be contacted or is disqualified for any reason, the Sponsors reserve the right to determine an alternate winner or not to award that winner’s prize, in their sole discretion.
Contest winners will be notified by e-mail and/or phone by March 29, 2013, and have 24 hours from the time the email was sent to contact the operator and claim their prize. There will be two winners in each category, for a total of eight (8) prizes. In the event the prize or prize notification is unclaimed or undeliverable, the prize will be forfeited and an alternate winner may be selected.
Participants, contestants and winner(s) must be U.S. residents of San Diego County, be at least 18-years old, or adequately authorized to participate by a parent or guardian as summarized below, have an active social security number, and be able to present a valid California ID to contest officials to prove age and residency before the prize is awarded. A parent or guardian of any participant who is a minor must sign a release on behalf of the minor to be eligible to receive a prize, and that parent or guardian will assume all responsibilities and eligibility requirements as outlined in the contest rules. The Sponsors reserve the right to refuse to award a prize to or on behalf of any minor.
