The 2013 Franschhoek Literary Festival Opens May 17th (South Africa)

The Franschhoek Literary Festival, now in its 7th year, has gained an international reputation as a respected celebration of books and writers, with the focus on promoting South African writing and reading, and well supported by the local community. The aims of the Franschhoek Literary Festival are to appreciate and encourage writers and writing at informal events in a village setting, to foster a vibrant culture of reading that will excite children about reading and writing, and to raise funds for community and school libraries in the Franschhoek valley so that appropriate books are available to all.

The Franschhoek Literary Festival 2013 will again be hosting more than 50 authors and poets. Below is a taster of participating authors.
  • Alexander McCall Smith, prolific author of The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency, 44 Scotland Street and The Corduroy Mansions series, the Isabel Dalhousie novels, and the von Igelfeld Entertainments.
  • Anthony Horowitz, author of the Alex Rider series for teens and the new Sherlock Holmes novel, The House of Silk, TV series and movie scriptwriter, and winner of a number of awards, including Author of the Year and Children’s Book of the Year.
  • Antony Beevor, British war historian, author most recently of The Second World War and winner of the Samuel Johnson Prize, the Wolfson Prize for History and the Hawthornden Prize for Literature.
  • Kate Mosse, bestselling author of the Languedoc Trilogy – the first of which has been made into the TV series Labyrinth, much of it shot in the Cape and scheduled for May. She is also a critic, broadcaster, literary judge and campaigner for literacy, and considered one of the most influential people in UK publishing.
  • A D (Andrew) Miller, journalist, British editor on The Economist and author of the debut novel Snowdrops which was shortlisted for the 2011 Man Booker Prize.
  • Paul Geraghty, award-winning children’s book author and illustrator, will be taking part in the festival’s Book Week and Open Day for Young Readers.
South African writers attending the festival include Mbuyiseni Oswald Mtshali (Sounds of a Cowhide Drum), Marguerite Poland (Taken Captive by Birds), Redi Thlabi (Endings & Beginnings), historians Bill Nasson (South Africa at War: 1939 – 1945) and Randolph Vigne (Thomas Pringle), poet and novelist Finuala Dowling, Fred de Vries (Rigtingbedonnerd), Jo-Anne Richards (The Imagined Child), Anchien Troskie (Die Staat Teen Anna Bruwer), Sydda Essop (Karoo Kitchen), Nini Bairnsfather Cloete (Remarkable Gardens of SA), Claire Robertson (Journey to the Interior), Christopher Hope, Jane Raphaely, Tony Leon, Chris Mann, Ndumiso Ngcobo and the regular lineup of proficient chairpeople, including Michele Magwood, Justice Malala, Jenny Crwys-Williams, John Maytham, Mike Wills and more.

Tickets will be available for purchase at webtickets from the 15th March.
