Politikon: South African Journal is looking for Editors (Africa-wide)

Applications are invited for the following three positions at Politikon: South African Journal of Political Studies (Routledge) Editor, Assistant Editor and Book Review Editor.

(Note that there is no requirement for members of the editorial team to either be African, South African, or to be based in Africa).

Politikon is the official academic journal of the South African Association of Political Studies (SAAPS), the professional body for South African political scientists. The journal appears three times per year and has a broad focus on issues of Political Studies and IR relevant for all developing regions of the world.

Applicants should submit a comprehensive CV indicating experience with editorial boards, editing academic journals and/or book reviews.

Period of appointment will be from 1 January 2013 to 31 December 2015.

Editors will receive an honorarium for their work. Editors will have to become members of SAAPS if they are not already members.

REQUIREMENTS:

Editor:

PhD in Political Science or related social science field, a strong publication record, and experience of editing and guest editing academic articles for journal publication, are basic requirements. An NRF Rating will be advantageous. Knowledge of the academic publishing environment will be an asset. The editor will have the following responsibilities regarding the publishing processes:

Ensure academic quality and currency of the journal; maintain and increase the international stature of the journal through inclusion in journal indices, databases and aggregators; plan and supervise the production of a theme-based special issue every year; solicit and vet scholarly submissions; determine two peer reviewers for each article; oversee the processes of revisions based on reviewer feedback; follow strict time lines for the production of three issues per year; submit feedback in the form of quarterly reports to the SAAPS Council.

Assistant Editor:

At least an MA in Political Science or related social science field with a publication record and experience of editing academic articles for journal publication. Knowledge of electronic software programmes for the use in editing is a necessity.

The assistant editor will share the workload with the editor and help with follow-ups throughout the processes of editing and publication.

Book Review Editor

MA in Political Science with experience of editing academic book reviews. Knowledge and interest in a broad range of Political Studies issue areas and new titles will be an asset.
Responsibilities will include procuring new titles from academic publishers, identifying reviewers, distributing books to interested reviewers, ensuring the timely delivery of reviews, and editing the book reviews.
