KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Commission and edit the Garden and Travel sections. For Garden this includes liaising, planning and costing garden shoots with the Gardening Editor. For Travel this includes developing relationships with PR’s in the travel industry and negotiating travel barter deals for stories.
- Find houses/ Style Snoops/ people to profile etc from JHB and surrounds.
- Manage the day to day running of the JHB office and editorial staff.
- Represent the brand at events and functions.
- Liaise with the Art Director re: JHB content, look and feel and execution.
- Identify story ideas and relevant articles (in conjunction with the Deputy Editor and Editor)
- Help oversee adherence to the magazine’s brand values and reader profile.
- Ensure that content generated from the JHB office for the main book, online and social media is appropriate and fits the House and Leisure brand.
- Complete the first read and approve all copy produced by the JHB team
- Update JHB booklists, run JHB brainstorm sessions
- Manage and liaise with writers, internal and external, where relevant. Build relationships with writers to ensure strong stories for the publication.
- Mentor and nurture junior staff writers; find and develop new writing talent.
- Keep up-to-date on local and international décor, interiors, travel, food, and lifestyle trends and maintain a good general knowledge.
- Maintain a strong network of contacts.
- Respond to incoming mail on editorial submissions and queries, in conjunction with the Deputy Editor.
- Interview potential interns where relevant for JHB
SUPPLEMENTS & SPECIAL PROJECTS:
- Work with the editor and BDM to strategise around new JHB-related business opportunities to leverage the brand and increase revenue
- Work with the BDM to brainstorm and pitch concepts for new supplements and special projects – where it relates to JHB.
- Attend client meetings.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
- A minimum of four years’ experience as a journalist working for a magazine or newspaper and experience in managing a team.
- Have a good knowledge of — and a love for — the English language;
- Have an interest in, and a good knowledge of, décor and lifestyle trends in South Africa and internationally;
- Be able to work with copy on a wide variety of topics, from interior design trends to food, architecture, travel, home features and Homes Solutions features
- Be able to motivate and guide writers;
- Have good organisational skills;
- Handle deadlines and work effectively under pressure;
- Be computer literate (Microsoft Office and the Internet)
- Excellent communication skills (written & verbal)

- Valid driver’s licence and own reliable transport
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- A thorough knowledge of Johannesburg.
- Travel / driving required for interviews outside the office.
- Able to work outside of regular hours, on occasion, to meet required deadlines
