The Sentinel Nigeria All-Africa Short Story Competition is an annual writing competition for previously unpublished short stories in English Language, on any subject in any style. Stories entered into this competition should not be simultaneously entered into another competition, and should not currently be under consideration for publication or accepted for publication elsewhere. The stories must also not have been posted to a blog, a website, Facebook or any other social media.
ELIGIBILITY: This competition is open to all professional and amateur writers from every part of Africa living within the continent or in the diaspora.
LENGTH: 1,500 words maximum (excluding title)
PRIZES:
- First prize: N35,000 (Approx. £140/$220)
- Second prize: N20,000 (Approx. £80/$126)
- Third prize: N10,000 (Approx. £40/$63)
- High commendation: N4,000 x 3 (Approx. £16/$25)
- First publication: The 3 winning and 3 highly commended stories will receive first publication in Sentinel Nigeria magazine in May 2013.
JUDGE: Jude Dibia, author of Blackbird.
RESULTS: The results of this competition and the judge’s report will be published on the 30th April 2013.
ADMINISTRATION: This competition is administered by SPAWN MEDIA SERVICES – a trading style of Sentinel Literary Movement of Nigeria.
COMPETITION RULES:
- Short Stories must be in English, unpublished, and not accepted for publication elsewhere.
- Short Stories should be typed and must be no longer than 1,500 words (excluding title).
- Any number of short stories may be entered on payment of the applicable fee. Bank credits in Nigerian Naira only should be paid into the GTB account of SPAWN MEDIA SERVICES. International entrants may pay via PayPal.
- Each story should begin on a separate sheet, which should not include the name of the author.
- The author’s name and address should be provided on an accompanying Cover Note.
- The winners and commended writers will be notified by post or e-mail.
- All winning and commended stories will appear in Sentinel Nigeria magazine #14 (May 2013)
- Stories cannot be returned, please do not send your only copy.
- If you win one of the prizes in this quarter’s competition, you will NOT be prohibited from entering next quarter’s competition.
- If on the advice of the judge, the quality of entries is too low to produce worthy prize winners, or any other legitimate reason beyond our control arises which may affect a fair completion or conduct of the competition, we reserve the right to cancel the competition and refund all entry fees immediately by the same method we have been paid.
- By entering this competition you provide some information such as your address and e-mail address which may be deemed personal information. We will never pass on any detail you provide in the course of entering this competition to a third party and we will never sell your data to anyone for marketing purposes.
- By entering this competition you agree that we may contact you by e-mail or post via our newsletter with the results of the competition, the adjudicator’s reports and information on future competitions. You may unsubscribe from the newsletter at any time.
- Copyright to all stories submitted will remain with the authors but the Sentinel Nigeria reserves the right to publish all winning and commended stories.
- Please only submit your own original work.
- The adjudicator’s decision will be final and no correspondence can be entered into.
- The submission of stories for the Prize will be taken as indicating acceptance of the above conditions.
