Verizon Wireless Black History Month Essay Contest for Students ($1,500 top prize | St. Louis, MO)

ESSAY INSTRUCTIONS:

Use 8.5 x 11 paper (one side only) double-spaced, and type your: Complete Name, Address, Zip Code, Telephone Number and School. Failure to comply with this or any other rule will result in disqualification. Your typed 500-word or more Essay, should address the following topic: How would Harriett Tubman, Fredrick Douglas, or Dred Scott use today’s technology (cell phones, iPads, social media, etc) to further their cause?

Student essays should be submitted to The 100 Black Men of Metropolitan St. Louis by February 28th, 2013. Limited one per entry per student. Entries must be mailed to:

Essays must be postmarked by February 28th , 2013. Not responsible for lost, late, or misdirected mail. All entries become the property of the 100 Black Men, and will not be returned.

OFFICIAL RULES AND JUDGING: All eligible entries received will be judged by a local blue ribbon panel of academic, civic, business, and community leaders to determine three (3) winners (1st, 2nd, & 3rd place). The judging will be held the week of March 4th-8th, 2013. All winners will be invited to attend an award ceremony to take place on March 16th, 2013. Winners need not be present to win. All judging will be based on the following: Creativity 20%; Grammar and Vocabulary 30%, Content/Appropriate to Theme 50%. Decision of the judges is final. Limit one prize per family/household. Open only to residents in the Metropolitan St. Louis Area who as of September 6th, 2013 are enrolled as a freshman in a college/university or trade school. Families of the 100 Black Men are not eligible. Void where prohibited by law. Funds will be disbursed directly to the student after showing proof of registration, and they can be applied towards the payment of tuition, fees, books or other education expenses. Winners will be announced on March 11th, 2013 on our website at http://www.100blackmenstl.com
