The San Diego Association of Black Journalists (SDABJ) is proud to offer our annual SDABJ Journalism Scholarship Program to assist San Diego area high school and college students who are interested in journalism.
SDABJ offers four scholarships to students interested in journalism. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to two high school seniors who are interested in pursuing a career as a journalist. For community college students, a $300 scholarship is available. A $1,500 scholarship will be awarded to a college student who shows promise in the field of journalism in honor of San Diego Union-Tribune columnist Ozzie Roberts.
SDABJ 2013 APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS:
Incomplete or partial submissions will not be reviewed. Successful applicants will be notified within a week of the deadline. Please make sure you’re available for an interview on March 23, 2013 before applying.
REQUIREMENTS:
- High school seniors must plan to major in print, broadcast or online journalism, mass communications, or English to be eligible for the $1000 scholarship.
- Applicants must be attending or already be accepted to a college or university.
- Applicants must show financial need.
- Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
- Applicants must detail in writing how they plan to ensure the African-American voice is heard in the mainstream media.
- Application form: Complete and sign attached application forms in their entirety. If a section does not apply, write N/A.
- Transcript: Attach a copy of most recent transcript.
- Biographical Sketch*: Applicant must briefly describe self and why financial aid is necessary. Double spaced not exceed 200 words.
- Essay*: Applicant must discuss plans to bridge the gap between the African-American community and the media. Double spaced not to exceed 300 words.
- Work Samples: (optional) Applicant may provide samples of work (video, print, and web) for consideration. Samples will not be returned.

Recipients will be notified no later than Friday, March 29, 2013. Please note: Scholarship recipients will be asked to make themselves available for a videotaped interview to be included in the scholarship award presentation.
