This position is located in the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa and the successful candidate will report to the Head, English Translation and Editing Unit (ETEU) of the Publications and Conference Management Section (PCMS), Division of Administration (DoA).

RESPONSIBILITIES

Call for Environmental Bloggers: The Institute of Development Studies Climate Adaptation Project (Ethiopia/ Malawi)

Deadline: 15 May 2012

The Institute of Development Studies (Knowledge Services Department) is running a project that aims to take learning from local knowledge systems and organisations to inform understanding of hunger reduction and climate adaptation on the ground in two focal countries – Ethiopia and Malawi.

Our approach is to create an 'aggregation of blogs'. We are busily collating and following existing blogs that will serve as the stimulus material for an online discussion that interested parties can take forward and learn from.

In the online debate we will be looking at the outcomes of Rio+20 World Summit in June for hunger and climate adaptation and examine how these can become a reality on the ground in Malawi and Ethiopia.

The two core pillars of the programme of work are around Hunger Reduction and Adaptation to Climate Change, with cross-cutting themes of gender, resilience, capacity and joint learning.

Our blog of blogs will launch later in May. To be considered for inclusion bloggers need to:
  • Regularly post new material (minimum of twice a month.)
  • Write on subjects closely related to climate adaptation and / or hunger reduction.
  • Be highly relevant to Ethiopia or Malawi.

Timeline
  • Identify possible bloggers as soon as possible and by 15th May 2012 latest.
  • Aggregation of blogs live from end May to end of June.
  • A facilitated online discussion will be hosted by IDS shortly after the 'Rio+20' Summit

FCAE Journalism Award for Ethiopian Journalists

The Foreign Correspondents' Association of Ethiopia (FCAE) is soliciting entries from talented Ethiopian journalists to award five prizes for excellence in writing (English and Amharic), radio reporting, photojournalism and student journalism.

Prizes will include laptop computers and a top of the range digital camera. Winners will be honored at an awards ceremony on May 3, 2012 in Addis Ababa. This year's awards are sponsored by the British Embassy, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the German Embassy, the Embassy of the United States, the European Union Delegation to the African Union, and UNESCO.

The FCAE will accept entries published or broadcast in the Ethiopian private and public media in five categories: Print Amharic, Print English, Photography, Radio (transcription in English required) and Student journalism. Previous winners are eligible, according to the press statement of FCAE.

RULES:

● The contest is restricted to Ethiopian residents working for media in Ethiopia (except for the student journalism category.)
● All entries must represent work done between April 16, 2011 and April 15, 2012 and be submitted by April 20.
● One entry per person; individuals are allowed to enter in only one category. Entry is free.
● Materials will not be returned. Winning entries may be published for promotional purposes.

JUDGING CRITERIA:

• Objectivity: Entries should be unbiased, balanced, and based on more than one source
• Impact: Entries should instigate reaction, debate and/or affect people’s lives
• Engagement: Entries should interest a general audience and engage the reader
• Analysis/investigation: Entries should demonstrate analysis, insight and investigation

All entries should be submitted with a statement of not more than 200 words explaining why you think your submission represents excellence in journalism. On the same document, provide your full name, mobile phone number and email address.

FOR WRITERS:

Submit a photocopy of one story that has been published, in English or Amharic, in an Ethiopian publication or website within the specified time period. If the article is in another Ethiopian language, please send copies of the original story along with a typed translation in English or Amharic.

The story must be photocopied on A4 paper and the photocopy must show the paper’s banner (front), page of publication and date of publication. Please provide two copies.

FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS:

Submit your single entry on a CD in high-quality JPEG format. Include a short caption about the photo including when and where the pictures were taken in a separate Microsoft Word document. Photos must be published. We reserve the right to ask for unedited images.

FOR RADIO REPORTERS:

Please submit a CD containing the audio recording and a transcript (in the original broadcast language, along with an English translation) of a produced audio segment, either news or public service, that aired during the relevant period. The piece should be no less than three minutes and no longer than 29 minutes in length. Please provide full information about the times and programs on which the segment aired. Also, please provide the name of the radio station, its location and frequency, estimated listenership and the names of the producer, editor and anyone else involved in the production.

FOR STUDENT JOURNALISTS:

University students should submit their original pieces which have been published in their campus newspaper or newsletter addressing an issue relevant to their university or surrounding community in its original format. If the original language is not English, a translation should accompany the original piece. Each entry should include a brief description explaining why their article is relevant and important to their university or community. Entries will be reviewed by a panel based on objectivity, local impact, level of engaging writing, and analysis/investigation.

Job Opening: Textbook Editor for ABA Rule of Law Initiative (Ethiopia)

The American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI) is seeking skilled writers to edit English-language textbooks on Ethiopian law developed by Ethiopian authors. ABA ROLI has four textbooks in need of editing: constitutional law, intellectual property law, criminal law, and criminal procedure. These books have been reviewed for substantive content and now need editing for clarity and word choice.

Applicants should have experience in writing or editing legal teaching materials, ideally textbooks. Applicants should also be able to work quickly and within deadlines. An ex-freedom fighter who is now the Head of the Tigray Health Bureau in Ethiopia makes safe motherhood a priority. A charismatic Ethiopian health officer in residency in a Masters of Surgery and Obstetrics Program at a rural hospital. A direct but gentle rural midwife living and working within a heavily land-mined area of Cambodia. A captivating Haitian midwife, herself fighting poverty, working in a volatile, densely populated urban area.

These are some of the stories behind the statistics.

Sister is an intimate portrait of a global crisis, woven from compelling interviews, indigenous scenery and vérité-style footage shot in health facilities, homes, and villages. The sensibility of the film captures the colours, sights and sounds of the locations and events, of human tragedy and human bliss as we experience these dedicated healthcare providers and those in their care through intense and beautiful moments.

Their stories reveal strategies in place to improve maternal health and the maternal mortality issue, when the strategies work, when they don’t work and how the lack of transport, communication and education create weak links along the way.

CRITERIA FOR THE AWARD’S WRITING COMPETITION

* The manuscripts shall be written in English and show the mastery and use of the English language.
* The manuscripts should be thought-provoking and original
* The manuscripts should portray strong and admirable principle characters
* The manuscripts should use humor and/ or suspense to entertain and captivate the reader
* The manuscripts should deploy dialogue and drama to become lively to read
* The manuscripts should reflect modern realities and address some of the social problems which are facing adolescents and young reader today.

Linking Climate Research, Policy and Practice for African-led Development

9-11 March 2011, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

This three-day bilingual (French/English) symposium is a landmark event focusing on evolving approaches, tools, methods and philosophies addressing the links between increasing climate change and variability in Africa and sustainable development. It will feature keynote speakers from across the continent, and also provide a space for creative new exchanges and collaboration between African research, media, policy, and community practitioners. This is an opportunity to share your knowledge and experience of this important subject and work with others to help make a difference.

Symposium Objectives:

1. To provide a forum for exploring and promoting the latest and best in applied research on climate change adaptation and development in Africa.
2. To create a space for engagement between African research, practitioner and policy communities of practice.
3. To provide African media with opportunities to interact with these communities of practice so they can better communicate efforts being made to address climate change in Africa, and so they can articulate local concerns and priorities.

The AfricaAdapt Knowledge Sharing Network has a mission to encourage research, dissemination and sharing of knowledge on climate change in Africa, and on the ways in which Africa can encourage climate compatible development. To this end AfricaAdapt is issuing a call for papers highlighting new research and community engagement on adaptation and low carbon development in Africa.

Themes to be explored include:

 Links between adaptation, mitigation and low carbon, or “climate compatible” development
 Roles of local and indigenous knowledge in addressing climate change
 New thinking on community-led responses: From local to global
 The roles of media and intermediaries in translating, sharing, and advocating
 National and international policy: Linking policy and practice

The symposium is focused on Africa and we especially encourage submissions from African researchers, community based organisations, advocacy groups, and media. If your topic does not fit precisely into one of the themes above, it may still be considered if relevant to the overall subject area of the Symposium. In addition to formal papers, we are very interested to hear from policy and decision makers, donors, researchers, NGOs and community representatives who have knowledge and experiences to share that engage the symposium’s objectives and mission.

The deadline for submitting proposals for Symposium consideration is January 3rd 2011. Proposals should be submitted as an abstract – maximum 300 words. A committee comprised of members from the symposium sponsors will assess submissions and draw up a shortlist for extended proposals. The Institute of Human Rights, Addis Ababa University was established to play a leading role in the process of good governance, democratization, and development in Ethiopia. As part of advancing its mission, the Institute is organizing a national conference on ‘Human Rights Education in Ethiopia’ to be held in December 2010.

Interested academicians, researchers and practitioners are invited to submit an abstract not exceeding 1000 words on one of the following themes:

* The Right to Human Rights Education;
* Mainstreaming Human Rights Education;
* Human Rights Education Curriculum;
* Methodology of Human Rights Education and Research;
* Human Rights Education in Multicultural Society;

Travel Writers Wanted (Dakar, Nairobi, Addis Ababa) by World Trade Press

While new cities will be added to the site soon, we would especially like to hear from you if you have traveled to and/or previously written about the following cities: Dakar, Nairobi, and Addis Ababa.

World Trade Press is currently in development of a subscription-based world city and country travel website, AtoZ World Travel.

We need several professional travel writers to produce editorial content for as many as 200 world cities.

Please have existing published work to your credit (include clips in your application if possible). You'll also need to have intimate, first-hand knowledge of various world locales, and professional travel-writing experience is strongly preferred.

The assignment involves writing five to eight articles per city, including:

City View (500–550 words) Neighborhoods (1,200–1,800 words) Excursions (1,200–1,800 words) Insider's Guide (800–1,000 words) Attractions (up to 2,500 words) Restaurant, Nightlife, and Shopping listings (up to 3,300 words total)

We have a style guide and very specific instructions for content, structure, length, and style, and we do regular checks for copyright infringement. While these are freelance positions, we are looking for people who can commit to supplying us with a new city guide every week to 10 days, so this is a fairly labor-intensive project.

Pay is at the rate of $0.05 per finished word requiring only a brief copy edit and proofing. You can work from anywhere—we currently have writers based around the world, from Prague to Quito to San Francisco. Payment can be sent via Paypal if requested; we generally make payments on a bi-monthly basis.

Ledig House-Addis Neger Writers Residency (Ethiopia/Africa)

Ledig House is proud to partner with Addis Neger, Ethiopa’s biggest newspaper, to guarantee an annual residency for an African writer through the Addis Neger Fellowship. Each year the fellowship will be awarded to two writers who work in their local languages; one writer will be from Ethiopia and one will be from another African nation. The selected individuals will receive travel funds as well as a small stipend for incidental expenses. Interested applicants should follow the posted application guidelines and be sure to include a cover letter stating that the Addis Neger fellowship is sought. The fellowship is open to writers from all disciplines, working in all languages.
